β™° BASICS

Character's name: Zagreus
Canon: Hades
Canon point: When the River Styx takes him back home during the second encounter with his mother.
Age: From 24ish to late 20s for sure. He's immortal and chthonic, though, so it doesn't really apply the same way as it does humans.
Background: Wiki Link is here

Abilities:

♦ Combat (agility and resilience): Zagreus is a tough cookie. Aside from knowing how to fight with an array of weaponry (don't ask what the Hexagryph is…) and being born of two gods (Hades and Persephone), which grants him superhuman strength, resilience, agility, and even a certain level of invulnerability, he was taught in combat by none other than Achilles himself.

♦ Nerf this: Part of the Hades gameplay is based on the fact that if Zagreus dies, he'll be taken by the River Styx back into his home, the House of Hades, to start a new run and develop the story. This can be used as a plot point, but feel free to nerf this to scare the shit out of the lad.

♦ Death Defiance: However, as if it's not enough, Zagreus has two (to get to his canon point, lbr, I'm not that great of a gamer) of these, which means that if you bring his health bar down to zero two times, and he'll "bleed" back into life, so to speak, with some of his health back.

♦ Cast: An ability that is a slow long-range spell that launches a bloodstone — you could call it, in a way, the blood of the World they live in — which lodges in the opponents for a while or until they're slain.

♦ Boons and Keepsakes: Zagreus can use upgrades given by the gods (and it would be great if characters in the game could do this) to help Zagreus in his attempts to escape the underworld. Each god has a certain domain, and their boons and keepsakes follow the traits of said domain (Athena is a shield-bearer, and therefore her boons are defense-oriented, Ares' are damage upgrades, etc.) The same happens when Keepsakes are offered by other characters in the game. Boons are temporary but stronger. Boons are a transfer of energy of sorts and keepsakes items that Zagreus holds onto and wears on each run.

β™° SUITABILITY

Strengths:

♦ Determined: To the point of sometimes being obstinate and bull-headed, but it all stems from an unrelenting need to be loved. Hades' whole shtick is that Zagreus will be willing to go up to the surface no matter how many times he dies, all to meet his mom. This means that his will is particularly difficult to break, especially when it comes to the people he loves, or even the ideal of them or closure in his life.

♦ Kind & generous: ' Forgive me, O gods! You are not known for your kindness. But this son of Lord Hades always regarded me, a mere shade, with respect; and the congenial manner of an old friend.' He is friendly and willing to give a helping hand to those who need it, if anything, because it's his nature to do so. He will get out of his way to do so, too. Expect gifts (probably booze) or a cushion or two in the characters' beddings (or any other nice additions to the characters' housing) if he achieves some sort of friendship level with them. Unprompted. Just something to do.

♦ Self-confidence & forthrightness: In a certain way, this is sort of the cement of his personality. While Zagreus is humble, he believes he can do and achieve things, even if it will eventually hurt him. He will be honest and direct with his ex and own up to his mistakes; he will give people their space if they wish to. He will meet his mother, even if she "ends up hating" him. This is all based on the sense that he'll be okay in the end, and it will be worse for him if he doesn't act forthrightly or sits idly waiting for things to happen for him.

Weaknesses:

♦ Restlessness: He's very aware of it, too. Zagreus will refuse to sit down on a chair or sleep on his bed because he's 1) not affected by fatigue the way humans do; but also 2) aware that if he sits down, he won't be able to get back up. He's a little dynamo that can't be stopped, and leaving things that are out of his control alone can frustrate him.

♦ Pariah: Bearing the brunt of his Father's expectations and the underworld, Zagreus always felt like an outcast. He tends to feel so — he's not a god, but not a human, either. He was not supposed to be alive, even, and he's facing the possibility that his Father may have lied to him because he wasn't supposed to exist in the first place, so it could be that he was, at least on his Father's side, unwanted.

♦ Ignorant: Zagreus is also very sheltered — he lived in the Underworld with very little knowledge of what happened outside of it. So everything is all very new to him, and he can be slight gullible when given certain bits of information.

Fears:

♦ Not being loved/wanted: His biggest fear. He will not act on it until he's sure that he's not misunderstanding and will respect it when he doesn't. He's afraid that he'll forever be considered an outcast (or feel like one) and not find a place he belongs. But that could destroy him and take him on a listless path of existence until someone manages to recall that he has a purpose and can create love within himself.

♦ The Fates: The ones that basically have claimed that Hades wouldn't have an heir, and therefore Zagreus would die in his mother's womb (which he did, in fact, but Nyx revived him somehow). The Fates are mentioned lightly in canon, but since in Greek Myth their role was to ensure that every being, mortal and divine, lived out their destiny as it was assigned to them by the laws of the universe, they were considered to be above even the gods in their role as enforcers of fate. Zagreus knows that he teeters on a very fine line with them, or assumes so, even if he's not truly sure how and why he was brought back to life.

Desires:

♦ To live together with his Mother, or at least have some sort of closure as to why she left him

♦ To have a good relationship with his Father (even if he will not admit it so).

Regrets

♦ His Father: Their stubbornness and their way of seeing things tends to have them clash often and have an overall stifled relationship. He doesn't regret much and would never take anything back, but he wishes that he'd acted not so brashly sometimes.

♦ Cerberus: That he didn't give the boy even more pets.

♦ His loved ones (Thanatos, Megaera, Nyx...): That he hasn't told them he loves them.

 Tethers

♦ The Symbol of Hades: While his father wears a golden, bejewelled version, Zagreus uses it as a red fabric adornment on his arm. This settles him as a member of the House of Hades, although a slightly flimsy one.

♦ The Codex: A guide of all things Hades, written by Zag's mentor, Achilles.

♦ The three-skulled pauldron: representative of the House of Hades in a very intimate way, as it represents Cerberus, guardian and loved by everyone in the House. A representation of family and the domesticity that Zagreus craves.
